Injured Vieira stays with France

France captain Patrick Vieira will remain at Euro 2008 after winning his fitness battle.

The 31-year-old Inter Milan star hurt his left thigh on 30 May and was ruled out of the opening Group C game against Romania in Zurich on Monday.

But he has returned to training and seems to have shown he has recovered enough to carry on.

AC Milan-bound Mathieu Flamini was called up as cover for Vieira, but he will now leave the squad.

Flamini, who has agreed a deal to join AC Milan from Arsenal on July 1, was in an initial 30-man squad but did not make the final cut of 23.

France are in the same group as World Cup winners Italy, the Netherlands and Romania.

Vieira is playing his seventh consecutive major tournament and could figure in the games against Italy on 13 June and the Dutch four days later.
