Right-back Mario Melchiot faces a race against time to be fit for the Netherlands' Group C opener against Italy on Monday as he struggles to shake off a minor pelvic problem.
'An irritation'
The 31-year-old Wigan Athletic FC defender has been rested for every Dutch training session since Thursday evening and will also miss team training on Saturday. A scan revealed that the 21-times capped former AFC Ajax and Chelsea FC player has no serious underlying condition but he is suffering what a Dutch team spokesman called "an irritation" to his pubic bone. Medical staff hope Melchiot can recover in time to train with the team at the Stade de Suisse on Sunday.
